      A wise man once said, "poetry is like wine; it's not necessary to life, but it does make life worth living." Prose helps us through our daily routines: it bolsters our lives with vital information,  it lets us tell stories, it lets us write emails and love letters and course descriptions, but it's poetry--everything that is not plain prose, that reminds us how remarkable life can be. Even Walt Whitman's poems about the Civil War, though sad and dealing frequently with death, made his life and his time powerful and remarkable. With a focus on kick-starting writers at all stages and skill levels, this workshop will primarily be generative and will be filled with poetry. We will read poems. We will talk about poems. We will write poems. We will write poems. We will write poems until we are drunk from them. Love poems, poems of sorrow, poems inspired by nature, persona poems, poems of experience, and even poems so abstract, not even we will know what they are. All these varieties of poems will be seen as appropriate responses to our remarkable lives. Please join us in exploring and celebrating the power of poetry. Prepare to discover the fun of leaning down a bit deeper into every moment and expect to be amazed by the secret richness that a life touched by poetry can offer.
