D.L. Young

D.L. Young is a Pushcart Prize nominee and winner of the Independent Press Award. He’s also much less serious than his author photo implies.

A lifelong science fiction fan, his intense, fast-paced novels echo his many influences from books and movies, including Star Wars, the Mad Max films, Dune, Blade Runner, Star Trek, Harlan Ellison, and the novels of William Gibson.

If you like page-turning, edgy science fiction, you’re definitely his kind of reader.
Reviews of his current book, Juarez Square and Other Stories:
"The writing is crisp and engaging...and from the first paragraph, the reader is drawn into these stories, each having a dystopic edge." -- Albedo One Magazine

"Juarez Square and Other Stories is science fiction done right, style and substance in balance...Killer stuff." -- San Francisco Book Review

"D.L. Young has written a highly entertaining but also terrifying collection of short stories. I rate this collection as 5 out of 5 stars and can't wait to see what this author comes up with next." -- Amie's Book Review Blog

"...a collection of short stories that display a talented imagination and an ability to think outside the box." -- Portland Book Review

Recommended Books for Aspiring Writers
  • Zen in the Art of Writing by Ray Bradbury
  • The Weekend Novelist by Robert J. Ray
  • The Complete Short Stories of Mark Twain by Mark Twain
  • White Teeth by Zadie Smith
Student Testimonials
"The workshop was excellent! Thank you, David, for sharing your experience and expertise with us. Despite the differences in equipment and technical know-how among us, you managed to impart a solid method for setting up work for E-book creation in a finite amount of time. Many hours of trial-and-error saved!"

"You did a fabulous job and have the patience of Job. Thanks a million."

Teaching Philosophy
When I started my writing career, I was humbled and amazed at how helpful and supportive my local writing community was, especially in light of how awful my early stories were (I still can't look at them without cringing). No literary snobs, no secret handshakes, just a friendly group of folks genuinely interested in helping you improve your craft. Several years later on, paying that kind of invaluable support forward with new writers is a real thrill for me, and if I can also help support a great local writing organization like Writespace at the same time, all the better!
