THE WHOLE ARTIST
Houston meet-ups and writer hangouts
The Whole Artist
TIME: Third Saturday of every month. Start time may vary depending on event and time of year.
PRICE: Free for members, $10 for nonmembers. Become a member here.
Sometimes it can feel like our creative wells run dry, especially in difficult times. That is why it’s so important to be intentional about refreshing our sources of inspiration and ideas..
The Whole Artist Series events are designed around that intention, filling the creative well. Each event will be held at a unique Houston location, chosen for its artistic or natural beauty, where attendees will spend an hour filling up the well and writing followed by a time of sharing, either sharing writing generated during the experience, sharing about the experience itself, or just sharing in a cup of coffee and the community energy.

Art in the AM: Urban Hike
TIME: Saturday, June 17, 9:30-11:30 a.m. CDT
PRICE: Free. Become a member here. LOCATION: Allen's Landing Park, 1005 Commerce St, Houston, TX 77002 (map) Have you ever looked closely at a downtown landscape? Considered its place in your story? The historical significance of a building? Noted its details for setting? How does it shape or move your story? Your characters? Maybe it becomes a character itself. Join us for our first urban hike through 15 blocks (approx.) of downtown Houston. You’ll see historical architecture juxtaposed with mid century or contemporary buildings. You’ll contemplate the need for greenspace and see where nature inserts itself into the urban landscape. The hike will start at Allen’s Landing Park (on the corner of Fannin and Congress), and we’ll travel south on Fannin past the 1910 Courthouse and the Pillot Building, five blocks to Christ Church Cathedral. Then, we’ll head West on Texas to Travis and back North on Travis To the W.L. Foley Building. After our hike we will stop in to one of Houston’s amazing eateries for a snack, lunch, or just to rehydrate and we’ll share our work and talk about our writing experience. Accessibility: Downtown parking (boo!) |

The Submission Room
Come hang out with us and send your work into the world with the help of some collective energy!
The Submission Room
TIME: Sunday, June 11, 4–6 p.m. CDT
PRICE: Free for members, Pay what you can for nonmembers. Become a member here. LOCATION: Melange Creperie, 711 Heights Blvd #B Houston TX 77007 (map) You’ve written something and now you want to take the next step and get your writing published. Whether you are looking to submit to literary journals through Submittable or query agents with a book proposal, why not do it in the company of other writers while eating crepes? Goal: To have every participant exit the session with at least 1–5 submissions in Submittable or with a solid plan for where, when, and how to submit in the weeks to follow. Structure: First 30 minutes - This time will be designated for experienced submitters and newbies to air out whatever questions or concerns they have about the submission process. To save time, informative handouts with tips and FAQs will be distributed to those who want them. Before the 30 minutes is up, all participants will have an opportunity to share which genre they are working in and what goal they are working towards, whether it be to actively submit during the session or work on a monthly spreadsheet to better prepare for future submissions. Remaining time - All participants will be asked to work independently and quietly so not to distract other participants from their personal goals. A moderator will be available to answer questions and check-in with participants on a rolling basis to ensure everyone feels confident, knowledgeable, and productive moving forward. |
