Artists paint en plein air, or, "in the open air," so why don't more writers write outdoors? Writing in nature is good for the soul--we certainly won't be the first to encounter this! Think of Thoreau, Longfellow, Whitman, and brilliant writers of our own century such as Edward Abbey and Annie Dillard. So many writers have received powerful inspiration from the natural world, and have used this inspiration either directly, through writing about nature, or indirectly, through including natural settings in their stories. There is, of course, good reason for this situation, for in nature we rediscover the mystery, beauty, and surprise that we know are meant to be central to our experience of life. So often, our senses and thoughts get numbed and even dumbed down by constant work and stressful city living. Come reconnect with your spirit and discover renewal in the natural world--and see what experiencing moments of calm and beauty can do for your writing!
We will begin our workshop by enjoying amazing examples of nature writing by poets and essayists such as Mary Oliver, Wendell Berry, and John Graves. Then, we will explore Bear Creek Park with naturalist Glenn Olsen as our guide, and you will have an opportunity to have every question you've ever had about local birds, trees, and wildflowers answered. Afterward, newly armed with knowledge and inspiration, we will write. We will write from nature-inspired prompts and exercises, and then have time to explore and write on our own.
Please bring a journal and dress in layers, for comfort in the outdoors. You're also welcome to bring a camera, binoculars, or a folding chair or picnic blanket to sit on (or, there will be picnic tables to write on). If you enjoy drawing, you're welcome to draw a few of the natural scenes we encounter, as well as write.
