In this workshop, we will study crucial techniques for story structuring, including building tension, balancing desire and fear, and building conflict. We will explore exercises designed to expand our storytelling skills, and along the way, we will enhance our journey through immersing ourselves in passages of outstanding novels and short stories, listening to music, creating a little art, and, of course, writing as much as possible.
Prepare to enjoy an organic approach to writing that could change your writing process forever. During this workshop, we will use a wide variety of music to inspire our imaginations, ranging from the Blues to Classical to Rap to Reggae (so please make sure your speakers work!), as well as experience poetry, art, and history in order to help us build atmosphere and get completely in touch with our characters.
During critique we will explore several important questions, such as, "Is this point of view working?" "Am I focusing on the right character?" "Are the character's fears and desires coming through strongly enough?" "Is this character believably the age he or she is supposed to be?" And, most importantly, "What am I saying with THIS character and THIS story?" Critique will be constructive and supportive, and will be designed to focus on the deeper elements of story. (Don't worry! We'll be gentle!) Please plan to schedule yourself enough time to prepare a single submission, as well as a few hours per week to accomplish assigned readings.
INSTRUCTOR: Kathleen Bagley
DATES: October 24th-December 5th. Writers work on their own schedule.
LEVEL: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced
