As a writer, you love literature. You always have. And, you want your kids or your grandkids to enjoy the blessings of literature, too. How do you get them to understand the magic of reading, especially when they are constantly faced with the lure of television, video games, and, now, Smartphones? How do you get kids to slow down enough to learn to love books? Because, we all know that loving books will serve them so well.
Or, perhaps your situation is different. Perhaps you already have a reader on your hands. You'd like to get your young reader a few books for Christmas, but the child already has so many, you're not sure where to begin. Or, perhaps you don't yet have children or grandchildren or nieces or nephews, but you will, and you just want some knowledge to support you once you're there. If any of these situations describes you, then this is the workshop for you. During our time together, we will learn crucial methods of reading stories aloud in ways that engage children's attention (and perhaps even practice a few!). Also, we will discuss the reading challenges that children encounter and share strategies for helping them handle them. Though our focus will be how to inspire readers under the age of eight, we will also discuss ways to inspire readers between the ages ages eight and thirteen.
Please bring along two or three favorite children's books, if you have them, for we will be sharing recommendations, as well as our experiences reading with kids. Come prepared to walk away with dozens of wonderful new titles, as well as new confidence that books can be a bridge over which you and the children in your life can connect.
