If you want to be a writer, you need to read and write: This fact—which might seem obvious—eludes people more often than you would think. In this workshop, you will hone your skills as a writer by learning to read like a writer, i.e., understanding how fine pieces of literary fiction (for our purposes, short stories exclusively) have been crafted. Yes, craft—this is the key word of the workshop, and to study craft, we will read the contemporary masters of the literary short story, including authors such as Charles D'Ambrosio, Mary Gaitskill, and Alice Munro. In this workshop, we will learn how to dig into the rich details of the real world to craft exciting and truthful stories. Through studying aspects of literary craft and applying this knowledge to your writing, as well as through receiving and sharing critique, you will learn how to write a piece of literary fiction that’s as gripping as a good thriller—a story that makes your reader keep turning the pages, delighted by the gorgeous writing while, at the same time, desperate to learn how it all ends.
