The most creative and successful storytellers strive for dominance of one element of setting over another, one dominant personality trait in each character. William Peter Blatty's award-winning novel, The Exorcist, opens with a blazing sun-washed landscape. Margaret Mitchell sets the scene of her classic, Gone With the Wind, with bare white shoulders and “traces of soft little bosoms showing above lace flounces.” Similarly, the most memorable story characters are motivated by strong passions. Who can forget E.T.’s passion to phone home? Scarlett’s passion to save Tara? James Bond’s passion for beautiful women? Build characters with strong passions, and you’ll never run short on conflict. Build characters with strong passions, and they’ll help you write the scenes - their fears and desires will drive the story. In this interactive workshop, you will engage in brainstorming exercises that breathe life into a story by strengthening the passionate bonds between your people and the tools, toys, land, occupation, or lifestyle that motivate their actions. Any storyteller, no matter how experienced or in what genre, will take away gems of creative stimulus from this intensive program. After the workshop, come celebrate the pre-launch of Chris' new novel Emissary. Both workshop attendees and the general book-loving public are welcome to attend! Please see the "Free" tab above to learn more about the pre-launch, reading, and Q&A with Chris at 5 p.m.
