This is the ideal workshop for writers with some experience who know that the time to become a novelist has arrived. Perhaps you've taken workshops before and feel confident, but you want to find that exciting new edge that will carry you through a novel-length work. Or, perhaps you are your own worst enemy when it comes to starting and finishing projects, and you seek structure, guidance, and support from your fellow writers to succeed.
In this six-week workshop, you will create a novel concept and refine your idea into a solid, approachable plot that will attract agents and readers. From there you will outline your complete story – with emphasis on plot, theme and characters – from beginning to end. Finally, you will learn what makes the very best first chapters and write your own. With the guidance of your instructor and the support of your peers, you will take the same steps that professional writers take to initiate their novel drafts.
Through our weekly sessions in which we read our stories aloud, critique each other’s work, and discuss the essential components of successful stories, you will be inspired to give your novel the time and consideration that it deserves. By our last workshop, you will have created a solid concept, an outline, and a first chapter, as well as a plan for how to complete your novel. This workshop will begin your journey as a novelist and give you the knowledge and skills you need to complete your first book.
