In this workshop, we will study elements of craft such as voice, characterization, pacing, tension, paragraphing, and other topics that arise organically through critique. Also, during critique we will explore several important questions, such as, how do we create authentic characters who face the real issues teens confront? How do we weave exposition with real-time scenes to create a narrative whole that flows? And, most importantly, how do we truly get into the hearts of our characters and honestly portray their struggles and desires?
We will delve deeply into story structure through focused exercises and
immerse ourselves in passages of outstanding young adult and middle grade literature to discover the specific techniques that cause a story to "click." Workshop discussions are designed to be constructive and supportive, so come ready to meet some new online writing buddies, as well as to learn. Please plan to schedule the time needed to prepare a single submission, as well as a few hours per week to accomplish readings.
DATES: July 22nd-August 26th. Meeting times determined by registered writers.
LEVEL: Everyone
