This course is designed to give specific instruction in how to write a short story, from how to craft an opening that hooks your reader and gets him or her invested in your plot and characters, to how to write an ending that carries emotional weight and resonance.
The first six weeks will be devoted to in-class reading and writing, and will include lecture and discussion. No outside work will be assigned. For three hours a week, we will attempt to break down, step-by-step, the building blocks of a story, and apply what we learn in writing exercises. This part of the course is open to as many people as are interested.
After a two-week writing break, we will have four weeks of workshop for writers who want more detailed feedback on the stories they build. This part of the course is limited to twelve students.
