You love to write. Maybe your school has a creative writing class. You enjoyed it, but you would like to take your writing skills to a new level. In this workshop, we will examine aspects of craft that go far beyond high school. We will venture deep into the process of creating stories and study crucial components of craft such as character motivation, gesture, point of view, scene-building, as well as learn to fulfill the famous writing adage, "show, don't tell.” Along with exploring fiction, we will study poetry and poetic techniques.
Through participating in fun writing exercises, discussing great poems and novel passages, and joining in group critique, we will discover and enjoy the kinds of questions that professional writers ask themselves as they work. Writers of all genres are welcome, including writers of literary fiction, poetry, personal essay, science fiction, fantasy, young adult, horror, and mystery novels.
Out of respect for students' full schedules, this workshop will offer only brief reading and writing assignments between sessions. Also, the opportunity to have writing critiqued will be optional.
If you know in advance that you would like to have five or fewer pages of your work critiqued, please email Elizabeth and share the genre of your piece to assist her in planning. Registered participants will receive a supplemental recommended reading list our first day together, but if you would like to receive the reading list in advance, please email Elizabeth after you register.
