Whether it’s an analytical essay of a poem or a personal essay for a college application, effective essay writing is a skill that becomes increasingly important as you advance through high school and into college. This course moves beyond the basic instruction received in English class to help you unlock the techniques that will make your essays shine. We’ll dig in and get our hands dirty by working with multiple types of essays and learning both general techniques and how to adjust based on the assignment and purpose. Strategies we cover will include how to plan and structure your essay--including special considerations for timed essays--and how to revise your work to impress. Lastly, we’ll discuss how to proofread even when time is tight and identify common grammar and punctuation mistakes that can sink your carefully crafted essay.
Special emphasis will be placed on SAT, ACT, and college application essays. This class is only open to high school students. Students entering high school next fall will be considered on a case-by-case basis. For additional cost, students can schedule an appointment with Jessica in which she will offer one-on-one feedback on each student's writing.
