LOCATION: Melange Creperie, 711 Heights Blvd #B Houston TX 77007 (map)
PRICE: Free for members, $5 for nonmembers. Become a member here.

First 30 minutes - This time will be designated for experienced submitters and newbies to air out whatever questions or concerns they have about the submission process. To save time, informative handouts with tips and FAQs will be distributed to those who want them. Before the 30 minutes is up, all participants will have an opportunity to share which genre they are working in and what goal they are working towards, whether it be to actively submit during the session or work on a monthly spreadsheet to better prepare for future submissions.

Remaining time -  All participants will be asked to work independently and quietly so not to distract other participants from their personal goals. As a moderator, Jan will be available to answer questions and check-in with participants on a rolling basis to ensure everyone feels confident, knowledgeable, and productive moving forward.

The Whole Artist: Art in the AM

TIME: Third Saturday of the Month, 8:00–10:30 a.m. CST
PRICE: Free for members, $10 for nonmembers. Become a member here.

Sometimes it can feel like our creative wells run dry, especially in difficult times. That is why it’s so important to be intentional about refreshing our sources of inspiration and ideas..

The Whole Artist Series events are designed around that intention, filling the creative well. Each event will be held at a unique Houston location, chosen for its artistic or natural beauty, where attendees will spend an hour filling up the well and writing followed by a time of sharing, either sharing writing generated during the experience, sharing about the experience itself, or just sharing in a cup of coffee and the community energy.

Clay Family Eastern Glades

TIME: Saturday, January 15, 9:30–11:30 a.m. CST
PRICE: Free for members, $10 for nonmembers. Become a member here.
LOCATION: Clay Family Eastern Glades, 6502 Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77007 (map)
Connect with the moment and the gifts of the natural environment. Mindfulness meets the page with writing prompts that help us engage with our senses as we witness the stillness and subtle movements of Memorial Park’s Eastern Glades. The park circles the 5 ½-acre Hines Lake and its surrounding wetlands, providing trails and boardwalks to explore the aquatic habitat systems of each. During the writing portion, we will find a shady bench to write, and then share our experiences. We recommend you bring a bottle of water, sunscreen, and bug spray. A hat for shade would also be a good idea.

We will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the bathroom pavilion near the parking lot.

Accessibility: Paid parking is located on E Memorial Loop Dr (see map). The parking app, Park Houston (Apple App Store) (Google Play), is easy to use and may be downloaded before you leave. Parking is $1.00 for three hours. Trails are graveled, smooth, and even with plenty of benches spaced frequently. Many portions of the trail are unshaded and the sun gets very hot.

Art in the AM - Kendama in the Park with Michael Martin

LOCATION: Clay Family Eastern Glades, 6502 Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77007 (map)

Join us at our favorite Houston park as we explore the Japanese game of Kendama. The skill game is, according to artist and teacher Michael Martin, more moving meditation than game. He credits the practice with helping him through trying times. We will spend time practicing the game and then spend a short time sharing about the experience.

Never heard of Kendama? Check out the Japan Kendama Association’s website here.

Check out a video of Michael at Meca’s 2021 Dia de los Muertos festival here.
